Orange trees in the mountains
Ràfol d’Almúnia is the historic capital of the Marina Alta district known as La Rectoria, which includes the villages of Ràfol d’Almúnia, Benimeli, Sanet i Negrals, Sagra and Tormos.
Its name comes from the fact that it housed the only church in the five towns, created in 1535 by the local Lord, the Marqués de Almunia, to counter arrest the Moslem background of the local inhabitants.
It is a small village with just 400 inhabitants, most of whom cultivate the citrus fruits which grow in sun abundance on the sunny slopes of the Sierra de Segaria.
